Pink Shirt Day 2021

Pink Shirt Day 2021

On Wednesday, February 24th, staff and students at École Lord Tweedsmuir Elementary School wore pink clothing and accessories to show their support for anti-bullying day. On that day, we held a school wide virtual assembly to honor and celebrate the importance of Pink Shirt Day, focusing on three main themes: acceptance of self and others, celebrate self and others’ differences and how to lift each other up! As well, we were reminded by the First Peoples Principles of Learning that: learning requires exploration of one’s identity. We paired these important themes and principles with a beautiful story book titled “Morris Micklewhite and the Tangerine Dress”, followed by meaningful discussions with some of our Gr. 4/5 students from Ms. Lam/Mr. Sol’s class around what Pink Shirt Day means to them. In addition, we connected these themes and discussions back to our Orange Shirt Day Assembly in the fall of 2020, which reminded us that we need to work together to treat everyone with respect, love and kindness. To show our commitment, we engaged in a school wide “Sea of Pink” art activity, and asked students to write an act of kindness or a message about what Pink Shirt Day means to them on a pink strip of paper. Each class will link up their pink paper chains, and from there, we will link up the rest of the classes to create one long “Sea of Pink” kindness chain! As you can see from our photo, we have already begun to link up our kindness chain… we look forward to seeing this all come together as a school community – stay tuned!
